Immigration Reform Being Addressed by Congress

Immigration Reform Bill

The new fast track Comprehensive Immigration Reform legislation is working its way through Congress. Everyone knows we need some type of bill for those that have been here for many years but it seems that chaos reins in the halls of the Senate and House. The House Minority leader, John Boehner, stated this immigration bill is a “Piece of sh*t”.

This bill is totally unacceptable and a majority of Americans will have a lot to say if this bill should pass. Also, Obama has changed his policy with regard to illegal aliens caught in this country. They previously were detained and deported, but now the policy has shifted to “catch and release”. The number of work site arrests is down 50%since 2008 as the bills written under the Bush administration were revised by Napolitano and friends. I guess the more immigrants in the country that can vote legally by the election assure a win for Obama. Why else would there suddenly be this big rush to push this bill through Congress?

Components of Immigration Law in this Bill

This bill includes giving illegal immigrations legal status after 24 hours, even if their background check is incomplete. It would be rare if it is completed in 24hours. You might as well throw theimmigration laws right out the window. They are meaningless. We Americans will also have the pleasure of payingfor the immigration lawyers for the aliens. What a wonderful use of our tax dollars! Their Visas are supposed to be temporary but whatthey forget to mention is they can be renewed indefinitely. These new Americanshave 9 years to learn English. But, it getseven better. They will offer amnesty togang members. There are 30,000 knowngang members in 33 states according to the Heritage Foundation. All the gang member must do is say, “I don’twant to be a gang member any more”. I’msure there won’t be any deception with that plan. Another nice little perk for these newlylegal Mexicans is they won’t owe any back taxes so they just get a free pass. Plus, they will be eligible for the unearnedtax credit. Gee, do you think that’s fair?

Furthermore, absconded illegal aliens (those that have beendeported) can also be eligible for amnesty which will effectively shut down ourcourts where illegal aliens are concerned. One must assume they were deported for a good reason and now we aregoing to invite them back? Hand out someThorazine to those Congressmen and women as they obviously need to be in the loonybin! And I’m not done yet. The new citizens will get free tuition, something we don’t even give our own children as we watch the cost of collegerise every year. The Mexicans will jumpto the front of the line for legal status, even though there are thousands ofpeople around the world that are following the proper procedure to come to theUnited States. Many are well educated or they have a trade and would be an assetto America.

Another part of the plan will be to help out Mexico to try and keep Mexicans in Mexico bypaying for their health care, education, etc. So, there goes some more of our tax dollars. With our huge deficit where is the money coming from?

While this bill is supposed to addresssecuring the border, it is hardly mentioned except the 800 mile fence is nowcut down to 200 miles. So, you mightconclude that we will be doing another immigration bill ten years from now, as Idon’t think Mexicans are going to suddenly stop trying to cross the border.

Legalizing 120,000 illegal Mexican workers, who arepoorly educated and without work skills will strain the US economy evenmore. Conservative Heritage FoundationPresident Robert Rector estimates the cost of the bill to be in the trillionsof dollars, affecting Social Security, Medicare, particularly when the Mexicansretire as they will not have contributed very much to Social Security

Typical Day Patrolling the Border

Much Discord in Congress

The good news is the Senators are not of one accord. For example Sen. James Inhofe, R-OK wants to make English the official language on the US and not let an immigrant in until they can pass the current English proficiency test. Senators Barbara Boxer D-CA and Bryon Dorgan D-N D want to kill the guest worker program as do the unions. Since the unions seem to run the country now anything is possible. Senator John Cornyn R-TX wants to allow federal law enforcement to use information for immigrant visa applications in investigations. I would wonder why they are not doing that now. If you or I were being investigated they wouldn’t hesitate to look at our bank accounts, our work records and so forth. Senators Patrick Leahy D-VT and Robert Menendez D-NJ want to give more weight to families for earning green cards. With all these different opinions about portions of the bill it is very unclear if the Senate can muster the needed 60 votes.

Pelosi has stated that the House bill will look much different from the Senate version. They could come up with a good bill if they wouldn't focus so much on their personal agenda. Give amnesty to Mexicans that have lived here for a particular number of years without any criminal activity and so forth. They should be able to compromise but they haven't done that very well in the past.

Our best hope is an agreement happening after the November election. Then we have a better chance of having a good immigration bill

I was unaware of some of these ideas being thrown around. I really think that the law makers are FINALLY beginning to realize that there must be some type of action taken. Again, I am confused about how the left defines "illegal". Seems to me that if the actions benefit them and their goals to remake America, then illegal just isn't important to them at all.

I strongly support the idea of declaring English as our official language. If you want to contribute to this culture/society, you almost MUST be proficient in English. Most Spanish-speaking nations have Spanish as the official language. I believe in America and our freedom, I really don't understand what is discriminatory about demanding that those who have freely chosen to reside within our borders learn our language!! Political correctness SUCKS!

The first thing that has to be done is to secure our borders. That has to be the first priority. After we accomplish that we can turn to developing a comprehensive bill that is fair to the American people and those immigrants who have been following the rules. If done quickly, can you imagine the influx of people from Mexico and who knows where else. For the Democrats it's all about collecting votes.

Pamela,

I don't have answers for this situation. I liked Hmrjmr1's suggestions in yesterdays hub.

In Obama's own words "just plug the damn hole"! Of course he was referring to the gulf oil spill but that's the solution. Build a fence; electrify it with 220 volts and stop the flow; then use the Arizona Law in Texas, New Mexico, and Pansy Ass California as well, round those here illegally up and send them back. And by the way, if there are still any left by next May 5 (Cinco De Maya) then there will be an opportunity like Grizzly’s catching salmon to capture the rest!

Sheri, I agree with English being our official language. I never realized it wasn't until a few months ago. Thanks for your comments.

BPOP, I agree that the border security is absolutely the first act of business. Then, they can come up with an immigration bill.

Tom, hmrjmr did have some good ideas. Thanks for your comment.

Patriot, I like your fence idea. Finally a fence that works but we still have to think of those tunnels. Thanks for your comment.

As always, Great Hub, and timely.

I've received yet another e-mail that offers up a solution to the immigrant problem, based on modeling our immigration laws after the immigration laws of Mexico. In a nutshell, what they outlaw we permit and even encourage. Trouble is, I'm a wee bit leery of offering up unattributed sources as a basis for an opinion, so instead I'm going to ask here ... has anyone looked into how Mexico's Immgiration Laws are worded? If so, how do they compare and contrast with US laws?

It is my strong personal opinion that the government DOES NOT want to take effective measures to solve the illegal immigration problem and it is becoming more and more a farce meant to appease the public opinion and keep the status quo.

I refuse to believe that a country who had the technology to go to the Moon more than 40 years ago, does not know how to protect its border. The wall is a joke, and not a funny one for that matter; it proved useless in California, Arizona and elsewhere in the world.

The way I see it is that our politicians know full well we need cheap labor and the illegal immigrants are taking jobs that pay little and are hard to do. They use those illegal immigrants as scapegoats to divert attention from other problems that are affecting our economy; it is an effective way to shift blame and give answers that will ensure re-election.

It's disgusting what the politicians are anxious to do to us, citizens, in order to get votes for themselves.

Patriot, Good point!

Jim, I hear a newscaster talk about their laws and they are much tougher than ours. They do not want people from Central American sneaking in and will jail them, or deport them immediately. Thanks for your comment.

Petra, I think you are right. They could obviously build an adequate fence. The one they have is joke. I think they don't want to solve the problem and they want to make them citizens so they get their vote. Thanks for your comment.

A great, well written hub raising a problem which troubles every country in Western Europe. The problem, which even gets my back up, is that they demand, fiddle, steal and don't want to work. I am a foreigner myself but I never stopped working since I canme to this country. I never demanded anything fromn this country. If you go to another country you respect their laws and way of life. But they don't and that is where the trouble starts. I also agree that they should speak enough English to hold a job down properly.

I have met many people who have immigrated from other countries and they have always worked, learned English and adapted to their new environment. Thanks so much for your comments.

difficult and it is not that easy, I think securing the border is the best -- but if the US cant do that 100 percent, making sure that people who come here are legit people and are decent. 24 hourse giving them legit status is just not acceptbale.

Very nice discussion mam, Maita

The problem is that I see both sides - I know we are all about 'saving the world' but then at the expense of our own country? I do transcription and I do hundreds of reports on these folks that cross over and are instantly picked up for medical care - while my hubby and I pay horrendous premiums for our care and they get it for free. Something needs to be done about it. It is the land of the 'free' but I think the problem is that it is becoming the land of the free in the context we did not expect - and we remaining hard-working folks who actually started our here are paying for it! I think a lot of the politicians should go to Oz and skip along and sing 'if only I had a brain' because something TRULY needs to be done.

Akirchner, I love your comments and your suggestion is perfect. It does get very frustrating in many areas like free education and my grandchildren are on the honor roll and still have to pay out quit a lot of money for college. Thanks for your comment.

Pamela99, you can offered another well written hub. I love the way you have addressed each issue. I think we all know that this is political. Of course the White House wants to keep their vote; nothing more. They will do whatever to get back into the WH in 2012. That is just my belief. I could be wrong. Those who have been here for a long time should be helped; I think, but there is a right way and wrong way to give people a chance and we the American born people should not have to foot the bill....

Thanks so much.

I do fear that we shall all become a foreign country from 'within' - is that possible? And we will be the minorities! Good grief - nothing seems to make much sense these days.

Pamela99 profile image

Pamela99 Hub Author 24 months ago

Ictodd, Thanks for your comments. It seems everybody has an ulterior motive anymore. I think if people have been here a long time they should be given immunity also. I don't think we should have to pay for everything with our tax money.

Akirchner, I think your fear is possible as the Latino population is growing rapidly as they have more children than white or black families. Thanks for your comments.

Check this out, next problems???????/

Australian Prime Minister does it again!!

This man should be appointed King of the World.. Truer words have never been spoken.

It took a lot of courage for this man to speak what he had to say for the world to hear. The retribution could be phenomenal, but at least he was willing to take a stand on his and Australia 's beliefs.

Whole world needs a leader like this!

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd - Australia

Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia , as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks..

Separately, Rudd angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques. Quote:

'IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT.. Take It Or Leave It.

I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali , we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians. '

'This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom'

'We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society . Learn the language!'

'Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.'

'We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.'

'This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, 'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'.'

'If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.'

Maybe if we circulate this amongst ourselves in Canada & USA , WE will find the courage to start speaking and voicing the same truths.

Pam, Great Hub. It's just plain not fair that illegal immigrants get better benefits than tax paying citizens. We're pay for for all this stuff. Again congress is not listening or they just don't care about hard working tax paying citizens. I liked 50 caliber's idea. It seems its the only we as citizens can get back to a level playing field.
