History of Cashmere

Cashmere has been a desirable fabric starting in Victorian England, where it was in demand by people by high society, and it is still an expensive purchase quite often. Sweaters, socks, suits, dresses, scarves and shawls are just some of the products produced by Cashmere.

Initially cashmere producing areas were in the Himalayas, then extending to China. China is still the largest producer of raw cashmere, estimated to 10,000 metric tons per year.

As Australia and the American Southwest was being settled by immigrants from Europe, they brought everything they could from their origin, which quite often included goats. They wanted to match the goats with goats already in American. They found the Spanish goat had similar fiber. They paired these goats, which often escaped and ran wild, particularly in rural Texas, however, the Spanish goats were capable of surviving the harsh climate. The initial product was called cashgora, which was a similar product but not quite as fine a quality cashmere. Ultimately, research used genetics, environment and better nutrition to produce a better quality cashmere. Commercial cashmere is now produced by goats located in Colorado, New Hampshire and Washington state. Research continues to improve the quality of cashmere in America. Spring moulting season is when the goats naturally shed their winter coat.

There are a huge variety of new styles of sweaters this season and pampering yourself with cashmere is always a pleasure. Cashmere has become more affordable over the past few years is you watch the sales.

Many sweaters have a longer length, which makes them warm enough for cool weather. Others have frilly trim down the front and on the sleeves. Regardless of what style suits you, there is an extremely large variety from which to chose.

Summary

Whether your budget will let you buy luxurious cashmere or quality sweaters made with other fabrics, the styles this year are very unique and beautiful.

Many of the sweater are to enhance the look of an outfit, so there is no buttons or zippers to close the front. Others are designed to keep you warm with buttons and maybe a tie closure around your waste. It seems as if Jamaica is going to have a very cool Christmas, I may need to get a sweater. I love scarves but Jamaica is too warm for them.

Pamela99 6 months ago

Cardisa, Maybe a light silky scarf will be appropriate if you do have a cool winter. I appreciate your comments.

Great information about cashmere and where the majority of the goats are located in the U.S. for the commercial production of this product as well as the other countries who produce it on a large scale. Wish I could wear it...it makes me itch. I love the feel of it! My husband has some great cashmere sweaters. Up and interesting votes.

Pamela99 6 months ago

Peggy, It is a shame you can't wear cashmere but allergies do rule some things in life. I appreciate your comments.

Pamela - I love scarves - not simply for the look and the protection from the bitter cold here at times, but I also use mine in times of feeling that old thing come upon me....open mouth, insert foot. I routinely use my scarf to stuff it in my mouth to keep from saying something idiotic...and if I forget, I always have Bob who will suggest it at the snap of 2 fingers~~

Seriously - very informative and interesting. Love the different options!

Pamela99 6 months ago

susan, I did mention it to her and she said she hadn't had any requests for a flattop but I've been told I should go to a barber to get a good cut. I think Kellymoms cut is cute.

LydieRVgirl 6 months ago

Pamela, Hi it's Lydie Did, she tell you to try a flattop.

That is true, I go to a barbershop for my flattop.I called a few before I found one. You may want to call a few first if you decide to get a flattop, some don't like to cut womens hair, If they say come on in, then go and have fun with it. I just got mine trimmed today while I was out shopping for gifts for the grandkids. Thanks my friend

Hi Pamela

I love silk scarves and regularly wear them to work. They have the ability to lift an outfit and by just changing your scarf and accessories the whole thing looks totally different.

Amber:)

Pamela99 6 months ago

Amber, I like to do that also. Thank you for your comment.

RTalloni 6 months ago

Thanks for a nice overview of sweaters, Pamela. I love the look, but can't seem to be comfortable wearing them. Maybe I need a cashmere one...under the tree! :)

akirchner has some very good ideas on why to wear them... :)

Pamela99 6 months ago

RTalloni, I think you would enjoy the soft feel of a cashmere sweater from under the tree. Thanks for your comments. Happy Thanksgiving.
