Snoring and Apnea -the Noisy Killer
71Snoring a Major Problem
Snoring is a problem for approximately 30% of the population and that percentage rises to 40% for middle aged people, however, even 5.6% of children snore. Twice as many men snore than women; however, after menopause that gap narrows. Typically short women who are overweight and have sinus problems are more apt to snore as compared to men. Sleep apnea is the greatest concern for a person who snores and may occur in as many as 20-40% of the adult snorers.

Snoring Symptoms
Some symptoms snorers have during the day are headaches, fatigue, irritability or moodiness, as they are not getting enough sleep at night. If you are snoring you are typically not dreaming, which can cause the irritability you feel the next day. There is some controversy about this in the medical community, however, you are paralyzed during your many short dreams throughout the night in most cases. Dreaming is said to help our mental health. Snoring is often a symptom of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea occurs when your tongue, throat and jaw relax, which results in a blocked airway and your breathing stops.
Two Types of Sleep Apnea
There are actually two types of sleep apnea. The first is Obstructive Sleep Apnea which is the most common and results from the relaxation of the throat muscles. The second type is Central Sleep Apnea occurring when your brain is not sending the proper signals to the muscles that control breathing. This second type is only responsible for about 5% of the people with sleep apnea.
Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a serious condition and can cause the following problems:
- Half of the people with sleep apnea have essential hypertension
- Sleep apnea patients are 6 times more likely to be involved in a car accident
- Heart disease, plaque build up and heart attacks (3% chance)
- Increased chance of a stroke (3%)
- Depression
- Diabetes
The National Traffic Safety Administration states drowsy driving causes 100,000 crashes annually with 1,550 fatalities
Exhaustion
Spousal Arousal Syndrome,
Snoring is also a problem for your spouse or sleep partner, particularly if sleep apnea is part of the problem. The spouse may be awakened as much as 21 times an hour, and they typically lose one hour of sleep a night. This is called the “Spousal Arousal Syndrome,” which can cause daytime exhaustion, poor performance at work, trouble paying attention and irritability. Recent surveys indicate that 80% of these couples, where one snores, sleep in separate bedrooms. Snoring can also negatively affect your sex life.

Stop Snoring
Some causes of snoring are alcohol consumption, being overweight, sleeping on your back, and taking some medications, like antihistamines and sleeping pills. Reaching middle age causes your throat to become narrower with decreased muscle tone. Men have narrower air passages than women, thus they are more likely to snore. Certainly nasal or sinus problems can cause men or women to snore. Being overweight is a cause of snoring as fatty tissue and poor muscle tone contribute to snoring.
As snoring is a curable problem, try various remedies to eliminate the snoring until you find the one that works. Talk to your partner, as this is not something the snorer is doing intentionally, so do not take it personally.
Tips for the snorer to try:
- Lose weight, as even a small weight loss may decrease the snoring.
- Clear your nasal passages by a Neti pot, nasal decongestants or nasal strips to ease you breathing.
- Quit smoking.
- Establish a regular sleeping pattern and stick to the plan.
- Keep the air in your bedroom moist with a humidifier, as dry air irritates the throat.
- Elevate your head 4” as this may ease your breathing.
- Do not eat a large meal right before bed and dairy products can also cause more snoring.
Try the tennis ball trick. Put a tennis ball in a sock and pin it to the back of your pajamas so if they only snore on their back, this will keep them on their side.
How to Stop Snoring
- There are snore sprays that you use just before bedtime that are very effective.
- The stripes that you put across your nose are very effective for many people.
- There are sleep apnea pillows which should stop the snoring,
- Surgery for snoring is considered a last resort and is only tried if everything else fails. The most common surgery reduces the amount of tissue of the soft palate and/or removing the tonsils.
If you can’t stop snoring it is a good idea to see a health professional as you might be suffering from sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a breathing problem which can cause many health problems and should be addressed.

Introduction To The Sleep Lab: Sleep Apnea Diagnosis
Sleep Apnea Treatment
As for sleep apnea treatment, milder cases warrant life style changes, such as losing weight, and quitting smoking. For more serious apnea, CPAP masks are used which requires using a mask connected to a machine that delivers air pressure. Some people do find this method cumbersome, but it is very effective. There are also different adjustable devices which sense your airway pressure and automatically adjust the pressure. There are also oral appliances that keep your airway open. Dentists have a number of airway devices available.

In Conclusion
As snoring is such a wide spread problem, yet curable it is certainly worth trying various solutions until you find one that works. As the person who is sleeping with the person that snores, listen for pauses in their breathing or choking sounds as they may have sleep apnea and need evaluation. I hope you have found this information useful if you are experiencing this problem. I hope you all sleep well tonight!

Good information Pamela. I saw a piece recently with Shaquille O'Neil where he was diagnosed with apnea and prescribed a device to wear while sleeping.
Excellent, informative hub on the topic of sleep apnea and also snoring, with many suggestions to help someone stop snoring and/or get diagnosed and treated for sleep apnea.
My husband was diagnosed with sleep apnea the last time he was in the hospital for cardiac surgery. He now uses a CPAP machine and it definitely helps.
Thanks for sharing this important information. I'm rating this hub up, useful and awesome.
Great hub. My husband snores but I sleep deeply so I rarely hear him. Since he started using the nose strips he says he feels less drowsy during the day and more rested.Simple solution with dramatic positive results.
My husband has snored for years. I resorted to ear plugs a few years back which block the snoring and other noises pretty well. Recently my husband discovered the breathe right strips and they work like magic, we now both sleep soundly. I still use ear plugs as I'm accustomed to them but eventually I'll probably ditch them. Useful hub, rated up.
I snore and seem to fit the bill outlined above. That will explain why I am always tired - and here was me thinking it was all to do with getting older! Voted up and useful!
A great hub Pamela and I am sure many could benefit from reading this one.
I vote up/useful all the way.
Here's to many more hubs to share.
Take care
Eiddwen.
Great information! Sad to say, I am a snorer. I have been looking for a suitable pillow for ages now but still haven't found one. I refrain from using nasal congestant because I am afraid of being to dependent on the product. I like to cure my snoring problem using natural ways.
I am a bit puzzled. You were saying that when snoring, there are no dreams. I could remember quite clearly there were times where I was dreaming only to be woken up by my wife for snoring.
I am not a smoker, and I am not overweight. I would say my late night sleep and sinus have contributed to my snoring. Also, I like to eat before sleep!
You covered this subject thoroughly, Pamela, Now I know just about everything there is to know about sleep apnea thanks to you. One question though - I always thought Spousal Arousal Syndrome pertained to something entirely different - at the OTHER END of the spectrum, so to speak! I stand, er ... sit corrected.
Hi, Pamela, great information, my son has just moved in with his girlfriend and he is having to sleep on the couch sometimes because of her snoring! I will send her this! lol thanks nell
Wonderfully interesting hub Pamela, both me and my husband snore,LOL, but it is me that suffers with the sleep apnea. Thank you for this hub, I now know a lot more about it.
Hi Pamela, I snore and suffer sleep apnea because of sever sinus problem. I procrastinate in getting it sorted out because I have a wonderful partner who it does not bother. Thanks for reminding me to get it sorted out before it causes another problem.
Hi Pamela, really informative hub, I didn't realise you don't dream when you snore, my husband snores, that has definitely improved since he stopped smoking, many thanks and voted up!
Nicely done again, Pam. The CPAP machine is very useful from what I've heard. Thanks for the very detailed and useful information.
Another great article Pam. I have a friend who snores, she is overweight. Perhaps she will read this and start that dreaded diet. Thank you.
Cheers
My father-in-law used to stop breathing several times a night in between loud bouts of snoring. Every time we stayed with them it couldn't help but wake us up and keep us worried. A CPAP machine made all the difference for him.
Great info on a super important subject, especially where heart disease is concerned! We have a friend who didn't think it 'mattered' if he snored - until he went to his CV surgeon! More people should 'wake up' on this subject...ha ha
Very good Pam. I suffered with this for most of my life until I started with the mask. Now I don't fall asleep at the wheel while driving.
Wow, interesting fact and tips. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing this important info Pamela. The stress of trying to deal with the problems associated from snoring without professional help must be difficult. I'll be sharing this with a friend. Voted useful.
My father is snorer. I'll show this information to him. Thanks, Pam. I love this hub. Rated up as usual. Have a nice weekend!
Love and peace,
Pamela99,
I love the information as you have presented it and hope that my hubby will follow up after reading, when I share this with him. Sometimes when a "wife/ nurse" suggests something, it does not have the same impact...!!
In the meantime, your suggestions like the earplugs (which I swear by) are also wonderful! This is very well written. Voted UP & USEFUL. Thank you.
Pamela, I am all over again impressed with your style of writing. Your topics are always relevant and you present the most relevant information short, sweet and thoroughly. It is a pleasure to read your articles. Thanks for the list of solutions. Unfortunately I got it too late, or perhaps fortunately, because David and I snored beautiful, unforgettable symphonies :)))
Thanks Pam for this nice hub. I've really enjoyed reading. There is one benefit for snoring. It make you sure that someone is still alive:) Voted up and awesome:)
GREAT HUB!!!! My dad had a problem with falling asleep! His nickname was sleepy. Very informational Hub as always Pamela99, Voted-Up! and Useful!!!
A very comprehensive and detailed hub. Thank you Pamela. How are getting on with your hands? I truly hope they are better.
Great Hub with a wealth of info. I had not thought about the effect snoring has on dreaming and the knock on effect this has
Thank you, Pamela, for the good news. Take care.
Pamela,
Very informative and great topic. It is very useful hub.I really like.

A dear friend has just been diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. She hated using the CPAP machine during her two week evaluation period, but she was coughing less and much more like her old cheerful self. She is now awaiting the results, and we have all noticed how tired she is again, and how much she is coughing. Hopefully she will be back on the "hated machine" soon. It really made such a difference.

Great informative hub, rated up and useful; I think I have Sleep Apenea as I almost killed my wife and I last summer while driving my Porsche convertible at 2:30pm on the highway last summer; I fell asleep at the wheel and if she hadn't screamed out, well that coupled with my cat like reflexes, allowed me to pull the car over just before hitting a bridge abutement.
Now she no longer sleeps while I'm driving; that makes for some long trips!
