Keukenhof Parade 2010

Spring is a wonderful time for new beginnings. We're survived the long winter and there is excitement in the air when the air warms, the spring rains begin and the flowers start to bloom. It's like we were stuck in the house in the cold and all of a sudden we can walk or run outside without the frigid temperature, the slushy snow and the world is beautiful once again.

There probably isn't anywhere this is more true than in the Netherlands. They adore their spring flowers, and the country side is covered with every type of spring color and bulb flower that you can recall, and in addition, there are cherry blossom and azaleas.

Spring flowers are always a delight after a cold winter. They are also a good investment if they will bloom year after year the bulbs will multiply. This particular hub is about the flowers and in the Netherlands but spring bulbs are planted in most of the United States. The only areas where you won't see this type of spring bulbs is in the far south, like Florida because it's too hot. Bulbs have to have at least six weeks of cold before they can bloom. Some of the favorites are daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, crocus and freesias. Freesia is a flower that is the favorite of many florist. They have a very intense suite citrusy perfume aroma. It is necessary that you choose your bulbs according to where you're going to plant them, in the shade, sun, or partially shaded areas. Plant bulbs produce short, medium or tall plants in a huge variety of colors. They need to be planted in well drained soil for the best result. Flowering bulbs can also be used for indoor planning which means you may have spring flowers that other times of the year.

Tulips are actually a native plant from central Asia from the northern temperature climates. The word Tulipa is the Latin name coming from the Turkish word tulbend or turban since that is what the flower shape resembles.

Tulips arrived in European gardens in the 1500s thanks to Ogier Gheselin de Busbecq, the Ambassador of the Holy Roman Empire to Suleiman the Magnificent. Tulips arrived: in the same time frame.

Holland might be one of the snow festivals but there are tulip festivals around the world. In the United States tulip festivals are held in several North American cities, particularly those with Dutch heritage. They include Albany and New York, NY; Ottawa, Ontario, Montreal, Canada;  Skagit Valley in Washington state; Orange City, Iowa; Woodburn, Oregon; Belle Plain, Kansas; and many more places. People flock to these gorgeous garden every season.

I have been to Amesterdam, Hague and Madurodam. I saw greenery everywhere. Tulip gardens were most common.

I can certainly share your joy as in my own country, Pakistan, there is big festival known as Shalimar Garden Festival which marks the start of spring.

Thank you Pamela99 for a good hub.

WILL IT BE THE SAME IF THE MUSLIMS TAKE OVER?

Pamela99 profile image

Pamela99 Hub Author 2 years ago

Vrajavata, I sure don't know how to answer that question. I imagine there will be changes (not for the better) in the Netherlands as they have such a huge Muslim population but maybe they like the flowers.

Thanks for your comment.
