Maya Indians and Calendar Predicting End of World in 2012
87Maya Native Population
The Maya Indians have fascinated scholars, as well as, the general population for many years. The Indians are often referred to as Mayan, but that is incorrect. Maya is the term for the Indians and the language in the Mayan culture. As the Maya population suddenly formed in the Americas with a well-developed and fully functional socio-economic system, scholars often disagree or are baffled as they have no good explanation how this occurred.

How Nomads Originally Came to America
All of the original inhabitants of the Americas are thought to have crossed the Bering Straits when the level of the ocean dropped enough to form a bridge between Alaska and Siberia. Many of the nomads migrated throughout North America and eventually ended up in central and south America. Records of archaeologist show evidence of the first Maya people as early as 1100 BC. The evidence shows that many of people lived in Copan Valley, Honduras probably came from nearby mountainous regions or the Guatemala highlands. Mayan history is divided into four segments. The Classic period occurred between 300 and 900 A.D. when they were at the height of the pre-Colombian culture.
Pre-Classical Period of the Maya Indian
The Maya people settled throughout the Yucatán Peninsula (over 100,000 miles) from the northern Lowlands, which is a porous limestone shelf, with rain forests extending toward the South. Their population extended into the volcanic mountains, which were referred to as the Highlands, found further south of the region. The civilization had great lords who were a small elite group that ruled over as many as 50 independent states and tens of thousands of village farmers.
In low lands they primarily produced crops, such as squash, beans, chili peppers, amaranth, manioc, cacao, cotton for like cloth and sisal for heavy cloth and rope. The Highlands and the Lowlands were equally important for trade. Obsidian, jade and other precious metals were found in the Highlands, which the Maya Indians used for trade. The Maya influence extended into several adjoining areas, as they were great traders.

Tough Life of Maya Indians
The Maya life was not simple, as there were many dangerous animals found in the Peninsula including the Jaguar, the caiman (a fierce crocodile), the bull shark, plus many poisonous snakes. Their method of farming was a slash and burn form of agriculture. The numerous small thorny trees in the area were a problem, and it was extremely hot from February to May, which coincided with the time just after the fields had been cut. They would burn the fields and the skies would be filled with smoky grit in the air until the rains came in May. The Lowlands received about 160 inches of rain per year and the water drained toward the Caribbean. The Highlanders used rivers as a form of transportation for both their people and their minerals, which was sometimes difficult due to the heavy rainfall. The Usumacienta and the Grijalva rivers were very important for their trade.

Mayan Rulers and their Temples
The Maya leaders were considered to be divine kings and seemed to be obsessed with power. They built great cities and trading centers and adorned the public buildings with gems, stone and stucco sculptures of deities and mythical creatures.
They ruled the people by dividing them into classes and professions, plus the territories were created with clearly defined borders. Archaeologist compare the peaceful Maya Indians with the blood thirsty Aztec Indians, however, blood sacrifice was used in their religious ceremonies. In addition, they were warlike and raided their neighbors for land, citizens and captives.
If you have ever visited one of the Mayan Temple sites you will note the flat surface on top after you climb what feels like a hundred steps which was the place used for blood sacrifice in their religious ceremonies.
Mayan Calendar
Mayan Indians
Classical Period of Maya Civilization
The Mayas were the first to discover the 0 in mathematics and their writing in hieroglyphics was the only written communication in America capable of communicating thoughts. Hieroglyphic writing represented syllables or concepts and were written on long strips of paper or sometimes carved and painted on stone. They went from left to right and top to bottom and pairs of columns. They recorded detailed histories and used their calendars to predict future and astrological events. Unfortunately, when the Spanish invaded they ordered the burning of all the books and only three remained.
The Mayan calendar was their greatest accomplishment, although it did not originate with them but it became the most refined calendar. They used their ancestral knowledge, which guided the Mayans existence and influenced most facets of their lives. They actually used several calendars and one of them was called the “long count" which was a continuous record of days from a zero day that correlates to August 13, 3114 BC and is considered more precise than the Julian calendar revised in Europe in 1582. It is often been said the long calendar predicts the end of the world to happen on December 21, 2012. Some scholars believe that the Mayan calendar shows a time of transition from one world age into another, rather than the end of the world.
The Mayas were also great astronomers and kept track of solar and lunar years, eclipses and the cycles of visible planets. In order to accomplish this task they developed a sophisticated mathematical system which used units written with dashes and bars to represent five units.

Post Classical Period of Mayan Natives
The Post Classic Period between 1000 and 1500 A.D. was a time when the Maya migrated further away from Guatemala and further south in the Yucatán Peninsula. Their accomplishments and artwork were not considered as progressive as those seen in the Classic Period. The three most important cities during this time were Chichen Itza, Uxmal and Mayap n. The people overthrew the federation that had been ruling them and lived in relative peace.
However, wars occurred between rival Mayan groups until the Spanish conquered the whole region. Chechen Itza’s was abandoned by 1300. The Mayan calendar predicted this event. The Spanish made it a policy to kill all the Mayan priests and burn all the books when they arrived in Mexico. If this hadn't happened we would have a lot more answers about this lost tribe

NASA Weighs in on End of World
NASA weighs in on the controversy about the world ending in 2012. They state the last big asteroid hit the year 65 million years ago, and there are no threatening asteroids that large anywhere near us. Solar activity peaks approximately every 11 years and these peaks usually cause some interruption in satellite communications. Engineers are building new electronics which will be protected from the solar storms, and there is no reason to believe one will occur in 2012.
There will be a rare alignment of the sun, earth as positioned in the Milky Way. They don’t think this will end the world. Some scientists believe there will be a total magnetic pole shift of the North and South Pole. Even if that occurs, there is no scientific evidence that the world will end in 2012.

Do your think the world will end in December 2012 or will be have a total shift?

Great hub, Pamela99. I too have a theory or two about 2012, if you would care to take a look. The name of hub is 2012: Colliding Galaxies?
This is incredible and certainly much food for thought - thank you so much!!
This was so interesting. I do wonder about the year 2012. The world is amazing..So many people, all with different cultures Thank you for bringing us a look at this one.
Cheers
I had never heard about Maya Indian before. I just remembered a little from the movie when I was kid. Thanks for writing and share with us. Pam, you have done a great research here. I always learn and learn something new from you. You deserve got my vote and I'll push all button, except "funny". Have a great weekend!
Love and peace,
This was a very well researched and interesting hub and I thank you for sharing it. I rated it up, useful and awesome. I'm always fascinated by other cultures and you've done a great job of describing the Mayan culture.
Tis a shame the Spanish invaders killed all the Mayan priests and destroyed the Mayan books, which leaves many questions unanswered and unanswerable about their knowledge and beliefs.
Hi Pamela,
This is a brilliant hub and one that I will be bookmarking as well as voting up.
It is only in the last few years that I have had a great interest in history and this one is definitly a treat. You have obviously worked so hard to publish this well informed and beautifuly presented hub and your work has paid off without a doubt.
Here's to many more hubs to share.
Take care
Eiddwen.
Hi Pamela. Nice hub and one of my favorite subjects. I would like to point out one thing though. I have done quite a bit of research on the Maya and the paleontologists have a viable theory about the Mayans coming over from Indonesia instead of the Behring Strait.
There is a lot of evidence to suggest that the temples of Palenque, Chichen, Uxmal, etc. have many similarities to the Dagobos of Ceylon, Boro Budor, temples in India and Malaysia.
There are no temples known to have been erected by the plains Indians of the northern tribes. So we can conclude that they did not have the same industrious ancestors.
Also, it should be noted that the Aztec may be descendants of the plains indians and they copied much of what the Maya had already developed.
As far as the Mayan calendar marking the end of the world, it does not. It is just the end of their long count. It starts over again as usual just like our calendars do on January first.
Very interesting article. The Maya had a fascinating culture so long ago.
The world may well end in 2012, depending on who we elect!
Great article, Pamela, and voted that way.
Wonderful article Pamela99, well researched and written. I beleive the polar shift will occur but I don't want to believe that it will mean the end of the wrld. Rated up and awesome. I wish there was a thought provoking button.
Excellent and well-written research about the Maya, Pamela, but I would expect no less from you. I have had the good fortune to visit both Chichen Itza and Uxmal and those temples are extraordinary to see in person. Especially when you realize that those structures were built wihout the assistance of machinery and modern technology. Voted up!
Great hub Pamela, you are an awesome writer. The Maya Indians were definitely an amazing culture and so were the Hopi Indians. But like all the other great cultures e.g. Romans, Greeks etc. what happened to them? I personally don't believe that the world will end in December 2012. Nobody can predict the end of the world and I don't think there will be a big bang. Humankind has been increasingly interested in end of the world theories and it scares many people to death - not a good thing. Others profit from the hype by selling end of the world supplies, survival condos and entry passes to heaven. Big business! My prediction is that January 2013 will arrive without much happening. Of course there will be an icreasing amount of disasters and if we don't watch it and look after our environment our quality of life will degrade year after year. May be we will realize one day that we were one of the great cultures that vanish all of a sudden without anybody knowing exactly what caused the collaps.
novascotiamiss has a point there!
Wow Pam...one of your best yet!
Brilliant hub Pamela, very interesting, and I think that novascotiamiss is right, all of these natural disasters are our own fault, maybe if we have the time left, we can start to treat our planet with a lot more respect and save our own culture.
Thank youi, Pamela, for your brilliant research. It is a fascinating hub to read. Excellent work well done.
I think it's time to become more active and do little things on a daily basis that help improve the environment. I we carry on the way we do right now we are doomed and we've only got ourselves to blaim. I have written a hub for earth day which I recommend:
Interesting and well organized. My hubs are, some would call, secret knowledge. Teachings on evolution. The 7 layers of illusion around the soul. I glanced the Mayan path, although I gained more spirit Knowledge learning from the scrips of genesis.
I've decided if I can't take it with me I'm not going. Great hub and I enjoyed reading this interesting look at Doomsday.
Oustanding work as usual Pam. I think a polar shift is entirely possible and as for the end of the world, gotta live each day as if it really is coming!
@KoffeeKlatch Gals~ Thought provoking button is an incredibly awesome idea and absolutely applies to this hub!
Thanks for your hard work here Pam! Up and Awesome. Hope you are staying on the 'mended' side of not feeling well these days!

I don't believe the world will end in 2012 but I read your Hub for the info on the lost tribe of the Maya Indians. I find the study of Archaeology very interesting, especially since so much information had been destroyed as you explained in your Hub. Lots of useful info here that you compiled. I enjoyed reading it.
Fascinating hub, Pamela. I agree with a lot of those who commented that the world probably won't end in Decebmer 2012 - but it sure will be interesting to see what all transpires in 2012! Esp. w/ politics and natural disasters. Many believe we are living in the last days - but to an eternal God the last days could still be hundreds of years away. I'm not too concerned about when the end will come, but I am concerned for others who may not be ready.
Who's to say when our world, as we know it, ends. Only one really knows...the creator himself. Yes, there are signs in the Bible pointing out events, but to God, a day can be like a thousand years. I appreciate your hub though. Very thought provoking and informative, Pamela99. Voted up and useful! : )
Great Hub Pamela I voted up:)
I've always had an interest in the Maya Indian culture. Amazing how advanced they were. As for their calender prediction of the end of days, December of 2012, I'm not so sure. If we were that close to the end of the world there would be more signs than just a date. That being said others have predicted happenings around 2012 as well. Like as noted, a magnetic pole shift.
Rather than a polar shift I believe there will be a massive shift in human consciousness which will bring about an end to the destructive monetary system we are all slaves to.
Everything in the universe vibrates at different frequencies. Human vibration will increase expanding our consciousness which will herald a new age for humanity. The world will not end in a fiery conflagration but its inhabitants will evolve to another level.
Well it will end sometime but hopefully in millions of years. The Mayans are fascinating I think
Great hub. Very interesting.
great info very intresting hub
Interesting and informative. It's good to know that NASA and the scientist have not found any scientific facts or evidence that the world will end in 2012.
Wow, it's a very yummy hub, Pras! Thanks for sharing your extensive research regarding strawberries.
Strawberry season here in the Philippines starts on the first quarter of the year. Baguio city, our summer capital produces vast of strawberries during the pre-summer season.

The polar shift seems to be a fact, but with little harmful effect,it's happened before.;)
