Obamacare- Favors For Holdout State Senators
78Senator Harry Reid
Senator Harry Reid - King of Dirty Tricks?
Washington DC is in the midst of a terrible snowstorm and a snow emergency was declared at 7 AM this Saturday morning. That's not stopping Harry Reid for calling for a vote on the healthcare bill at 1 AM tonight, allowing the Senators the minimum requirement of 36 hours for the bill to be read. He had promised 72 hours, but following his traditional behavior his word meant nothing. The bill is 2074 pages, so the Senate must be full of speed readers for them to even have a clue as to what they are voting for or against. Maybe the snow is a sign from God? Nothing else has slowed them down to a reasonable pace, although it seems the snow won't interfere either.
Nebraska's Hero - Nelson
Sen. Ben Nelson, Nebraska -longest holdout
Last Tues Harry Reid urged the Senate to reject an amendment Ben Nelson proposed to ban abortion coverage in the health care bill for fear that it would scuttle the health care bill. Federal tax dollars are not supposed to be used to cover abortions. If this coverage remains in the bill it will end up in front of the Supreme Court as it goes against the language in Roe VS Wade.
How was Senator Nelson pressured or bribed to change his vote? Rumor has it a Senate aide stated that Obama threatened to put Offutt Air Force Base on the BRAC list if Nelson didn't change his mind. Offutt is home of the 55th Wing, the Fighting' Fifty-Fifth and a variety of tenant units. Every branch of the military is represented with approximately 10,000 military and federal employees. This is the major defense of the northern half of the USA. So, we must conclude that Obama is willing to jeopardize our defense to get what he wants.
Next, the states of Nebraska,Vermont and others will receive special treatment that will cost all other states money, which means you the taxpayer. Nelson got a sweetheart deal for being the last holdout on the vote. The federal government will permanently pay 100 percent of the cost to expand Medicaid in Nebraska with no state input, That means FOREVER. And Mary Lamdrieu thought she got a good deal.
Vermont's Bernie Sanders
Senator Bernie Sanders- Vermont
A short time ago Bernie Sanders wasn't really on board with the die hard liberals, but suddenly he is all smiles and Vermont is smiling too. He is now in support of the bill and his state will receive additional Medicaid funding for six years and $10 billion for communtiy health centers. Now, he has something to crow about while the rest of the states will absorb the extra taxes. That's right, You and Me Again!
Senator Mary Landrieu
Democrats Ignore American People's Opposition to Health Care Bill
Louisiana Puchase II
Louisiana is another one of those fortunate states. They will be receiving $100 million supposedly to help Katrina victims and blah, blah, blah. Senator Harry Reid himself drafted this complicated bill in language that no one understands. This money was orginally earmarked for all those affected by Katrina, which would include Mississippi, Alabama and a portion of Florida. Another vote was soundly purchased.
View on How Americans Feel About the Bill
Republicans on the News
Republican are vowing to do everything they can to stop this bill. It was not done in a bipartisan fashion, not was it even available for the Republicans to see until now. It was hardly transparent! I have not even listed all the deals that I've read about. Polls clearly show Americans are against this bill. The bill cuts Medicare, Hospice, and Home Health Care to name just a few. The methods used to obtain votes are so underhanded I can't even think of printable words to describe by distain. I hope all of these Senators know they probably don't have a shot at being re-elected, no matter how much tarp money gets thrown out next year to create jobs and boast the economy. You'd better believe they have a plan to win their seats back and more. I don't ever remember an administration that was this underhanded.

Great informative and powerful hub. The Senate Democrats are behaving like irresponsible vindictive children. What an absolute disgrace.
Pamela,
The real kicker to all the health care bills will be if they pass a mandatory bill with no public option. If this occurs, the scene wil be set for a Supreme Court battle which will declare it unconstitutional for the mandate for buying a private insurance plan. However the frame work will be in place and taxes will have been collected so the public option will re-appear as the only mandatory option.
Pamela, You have written very powerful words. I have said right along, evil personified. It is downright scary. They do not care what the majority of the people think.
Pamela, it is a disgrace and I fear that more is to come. This administration is the "In your Face" type. Hopefully the people will be in "their face" come 2010 we just can't forget between now and then. They will spin it and many will beleive it. I can't believe anything this administration does.
This kind of politics epitomises how our government works. Not only in the federal government. All we need do is look back at how the former governor of Illinois who was put out of office because he was accused of making much the same deals as they do in the congress, and the presidents administration with his czar appointments, although when they do it,it's considered proper.
The bill was bipartisan because a few Republican senators want to stand in the way of helping Americans without insurance. I would have liked to have seen a strong and solid public option, but at least this bill is a starting point!
I do not need to look up bipartisian. I made a typo, and I am an intelligent woman with a master's degree. One in education and another in history. Stop talking down to people, and I could probably teach you quite a few things, such as how your standing against health care is wrong. No this was no bipartisan, and thank God. The Republican senators against health really do not care about the American people. They care about the get packs they receive from special interest groups, and that is about it! They do not understand low income people in Los Angeles County cannot afford to go to the ER, and even if they are admitted this bills will financially bankrupt them.
I just realized people that write hubs like yours like to put liberal Americans down. My education level is very high, and your speaking down to people is not flattering on your part. Actually the Democrats gave in way too much to the Republicans by giving up the public option, and many of us want it. Yes, the majority of Americans want health care reform, and many of those Americans support the public option!
Sweetie pie, what makes the liberal Democrats in congress any different from the republicans conservitives when it comes to sweetheart deals? The only difference is what side of the isle they come from and their constituants.A liberal duck is no different from a conservitive duck, they aren't what their all quacked up to be.
Believe it or not Liberal Congress representatives often have the American interests at heart, and conservatives are just worried about making the insurance companies happy. I am not worried that you do not see the difference, but as a conservative I know you think you can say the two are the same, but they are definitely not. Believe it or not I think if Ted Kennedy were still alive this health care debate would have been less ugly as he would have helped many conservatives to see the light on this one!
Pamela, Great Hub! This bill is so stupid. It was sold as a bill to help American Citizens get better health care. The only group that benefits from this bill is the Health Insurance companies. I voted for Obama because he was going to change the way things were done in Washington. Sadly, I have seen only business as usual in Washington. Politicians seem to be in Washington to not represent their constituents but their political party. This has got to end. What happened to a government of the people by the people and for the people.

Pamela
Great hub.
It makes you wonder about what Obama meant by changing Washington. I guess we should all take a primer course on Political English, so that we can understand election jibberish.
We might have had a clue in that the word "changing" didn't have an adjective or an object, to determine whether the change would be positive or negative, or even improved ormade worse.
Congress calls what they do as a negotiation, but when it is done in the private sector, it is a crime called corruption or fraud. The problem is that Congress puts itself above the laws that it creates for us.
My pleasure Pamella
Ughhhh, How can anyone defend this mess. They draw up legislation behind closed doors without allowing anyone outside of their own corrupt lot to look at this bill. They don't allow any input from the other side, and people continue to ask where are the Republican ideas?? When people refuse to be intellectually honest and are poisoned by lies. they can not possibly defend themselves with their education level.
Here is an excerpt from Dick Morris' column:
Obama’s health care bill, the poisoned Kool-Aid making its way through the Senate, will not confer any of its supposed benefits on Americans until 2013. But they will find themselves chafing at its restrictions and paying its taxes immediately after the law takes effect. Then, they will see no gain, but plenty of pain, for the next three years.
This odd juxtaposition of “suffer now, benefit later” is the byproduct of the Administration’s sleight of hand in specifying ten years worth of cuts and taxes in the legislation, but deferring its benefits for the first four years. By comparing six years of spending with ten years of taxing, it managed to appear deficit neutral under the rules of the Congressional Budget Office. In fact, the annual revenues fall far short of covering any single year’s worth of spending, adding to the deficit for each of the last six years over the next ten, but, viewing the decade as a whole, it appears deficit neutral.
Yet the political price is hardly neutral. Democrats who misguidedly vote for this monstrosity will face immediate political repercussions.
The harshest of these backlashes will come from the elderly who will suddenly visit their doctors and be told “no” when they ask for therapies or treatments. The rationing of medical care will start immediately on enactment and, one hopes, the outraged phone calls will start to descend on those whose votes enabled it.
The first “no” will hit the ten million elderly who now rely on Medicare Advantage to pay for the care Medicare itself does not cover. In a payoff to AARP, Obama gutted this program in his bill, ending over $100 billion in federal premium subsidies. These ten million voters will get the grim news that their premiums are going up and their benefits dropping early in 2010. The goal, of course, is to force them to drop Medicare Advantage and sign up, instead, for Medigap insurance — offered, not coincidentally, by the AARP — which provides less coverage at higher cost.
Young people without health insurance can expect to start writing $750 annual checks to Washington to pay the fines written into the bill. (And, after the Conference Committee finishes its work, the fines may be higher).
All Americans will soon find their insurance premiums rising as a result of the bill. The young, uninsured will not buy policies. Why should they? Why not just pay the $750 fines each year? Why pay between 2% and 10% of their household income before subsidies kick in? It makes no financial sense for anyone making more than $30,000 to pay for coverage. (And most of those under that threshold will be covered by Medicaid, not by private insurance).
There is no reason for the young to buy private insurance. The legislation requires that health insurers take all comers and not raise rates based on pre-existing conditions. So the young can get coverage when they need it, having only paid $750 per year beforehand.
The difference in cost will, of course, be borne by families throughout America who will see their health insurance premiums increase. President Obama and his Democratic rubber stamps may appreciate that they are not raising taxes on the middle class, just raising mandatory health insurance premiums, but the distinction is likely to be lost on swing voters.
From now on, any increase in health insurance premiums will become the political responsibility of the Obama Administration. As General Colin Powell once said of Iraq “You break it. You own it.” Since these premiums have been rising by an average of 10% per year for more than the past decade, this is a legacy most politicians would sensibly avoid if they could.
Pamela hit the nail on the head with 'CONSEQUENCES'. Something liberals, and most politicians today hardly take the time to think about (in fact it's a trend with the younger generation). Everything is do it now, hear the praise, bathe in the encore, deal with the sh*tstorm later. OR better yet, take a 2 week ciesta and let someone else clean it up.
Another fashion I hate about this whole deal, as an American citizen, I'd really like to know exactly what's going down when these decisions are being made. Do you really think if we were all a fly on the wall during these 'backroom talks' any of us would be supporting this 'reform'? This isn't a matter of national security, it's freakin' healthcare! It's time we start demanding a little more information on these life changing decisions these boneheads are making for us. I'm sick and tired of feeling powerless.
Great hub Pamela!
Welcome to the Unites States Socialist Republic! (USSR II) This is awful. Such underhanded tactics and blackmailing isn't very democratic is it? Thank you for shedding light on this topic, Pamela99. We're definitely going in the wrong direction.
Good Hub. Thanks for the information and the great YouTube video.
The Senate Health Care Bill would not my first pick. But it is a known fact that the Republicans would never fix health care in this country. Under current care, Tiny Tim would die from his pre-existing condition.
Thank you for this expose, Pamela. You've done us a service with this Hub. I am very surprised the whole country is not in an uproar over this whole thing. I guess Aldous Huxley was right in 1932 when he said the nation would become sheep controlled by happy pills—pharmaceuticals.
Pamela99, haven't you been following health care deliberations on C-Span? Oh that's right, the "transparency" promise never came to fruition. It's tough to get those C-Span cameras past those tightly closed doors to keep the citizenry informed.
I noted a Senator from Louisiana speaking to the Senate on Cable yesterday that was appalled at being accused of having her vote bought for this bill. She claims that she had numerous letters from her state seeking her help for Katrina, and that her constituency was for the health care bill. I couldn't help but wonder how many of them had actually read it prior to that vote.
My conservative cousin and I argue about the how's and why's of the health care debacle, but we can both see eye to eye on one thing at least: the healthcare system as it is does not work for most people and needs to be changed. Although I don't agree with some of the changes(like the special treatment you've pointed out here Pamela) I do applaud those politicians of the left and right who are working to try something new. I especially hope to see a repeal of the health care industries exemption from anti-monopoly legislation. I also expect regulation for high powered $250,000/hour corporate health care execs, they had their third, fourth and fifth chances to self govern and failed, it's time for regulation. I feel strongly about this, good topic, I enjoyed the details you've fleshed out.
